Spanish Steps

Occupying the northern tip of central Rome, the district provides an enviable position from which to explore the capital, granting immediacy to a wealth of famous sights, including the popular Trevi Fountain and the stunning Villa Borghese. Aside from such convenience, the neighbourhood is also safe, picturesque and decidedly upmarket, boasting some of the city’s and indeed the world’s most exclusive boutiques.

Connecting the animated Piazza di Spagna to the elevated Trinita dei Monti Church, the monumental Spanish Steps have attracted droves of visitors since their conception in 1725. Designed by the relatively unknown Francesco de Sanctis and historically associated with writers and artists, the staircase enjoyed international recognition for its starring role in Roman Holiday and has since become one of the world’s most photographed images. The adjoining streets and plazas epitomise quintessential Rome, offering pictorial backdrops at every turn and a vast treasure trove of cultural, culinary and retail hotspots to keep you satisfied throughout your stay.

Spanish Steps highlights:

The Spanish Steps are carpeted with potted azaleas during springtime, creating a colourful setting inundated with tourists and locals alike, perfect for people watching. A strenuous ascent will reward you with stunning views across the city and a moment’s tranquility in the charming Trinita dei Monti. A wander back down the staircase will guide you past the former dwelling of John Keats, which has an intriguing museum erected in his honour, and into the vibrant Piazza di Spagna. Featuring a beautiful baroque fountain, the square leads into the shopping haven of Via Condotti, an old and elegant thoroughfare lavished with such elite fashion brands as Gucci, Armani and Valentino.

For an escape from the hustle and bustle, head towards Piazza del Popolo through Via Margutta, a delightful passageway brimming with cosy establishments, thankfully untouched by the invading crowds. The piazza itself sports a scattering of fountains and a towering Egyptian obelisk, and grants entrance to the breathtaking gardens of the Villa Borghese. Other worthwhile spots within easy reach include the extraordinary Crypt of the Capuchins, the unassuming Basilica dei SS. Ambrogio e Carlo and the quaint Piazza di San Lorenzo. With its endless array of attractions, restaurants and preeminent retail venues, plus its convenient location, the Spanish Steps area guarantees a Roman adventure to treasure.
